How today's gold price today is set

  1. London spot price. Global bullion markets set an international USD price per troy ounce of pure gold, updated every few seconds during trading hours.
  2. USD → LKR conversion. That ounce price is divided by 31.1035 (grams per troy ounce) and multiplied by the day's US Dollar to Sri Lankan Rupee exchange rate.
  3. Local trade premium. Colombo bullion dealers add roughly 2–4% for import cost, refining and margin — this is the wholesale rate jewellers work from.

Buying gold jewellery in Sri Lanka: quick checklist

  • Look for the 916 hallmark (22K) or 999 (24K) stamped on the piece.
  • Buy only from an NGJA-registered jeweller — ask to see the certificate.
  • Insist on an itemised bill showing weight, karat, making charge and stone weight separately.
  • Ask the jeweller to weigh the piece in front of you on a calibrated scale.
  • Get the buy-back policy in writing — most reputable shops buy back at that day's rate minus 5–10%.

Gold vs Fixed Deposit — where should your savings go?

Gold is a classic inflation and currency hedge. When the rupee weakens against the dollar, the LKR price of gold rises almost mechanically — that is why sovereign chains held for a decade often sell for far more than they cost. But gold pays no interest, and every time you buy and sell you lose a few percent to the dealer spread and making charges.

A Fixed Deposit pays predictable, contractual interest in rupees — safe if inflation stays low, but silently eroded if the LKR depreciates faster than the deposit rate. Most Sri Lankan families keep some of each: FDs for spending goals in the next 1–3 years, gold for long-term wealth. Compare returns with our Fixed Deposit Calculator.

Sending money home to buy gold?

Gold rate in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Jaffna & other cities

The metal value shown here is the same across Sri Lanka — a 22K sovereign in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Matara, Ratnapura, Negombo, Batticaloa or Jaffna all use the same international bullion price and USD/LKR rate. Retail jewellery prices only differ because of the making charge, stone weight and shop margin. Ask any jeweller — in Pettah, Sea Street Colombo, Kandy market or Jaffna town — to break down the bill into weight × today's 22K rate plus making, and cross-check against the number above.

Gold price & gold loan FAQs

What is one pawma / sovereign in grams?

In Sri Lanka one pawma (sovereign) is 8 grams of gold. Jewellery is usually 22 karat gold, so a one-sovereign chain contains 8g of 22K metal plus a small stone / clasp weight that is billed separately.

Why is 22K the standard for Sri Lankan jewellery instead of 24K?

24K gold is 99.9% pure and soft — it dents and bends in daily wear. 22K (91.6% gold, hallmarked 916) is hard enough to hold a setting, chain link or engraving while still keeping most of its gold value. That's why almost every wedding chain, thali and ring in Sri Lanka is 22K.

How much gold can I bring into Sri Lanka from abroad?

Sri Lankan residents returning after at least 90 days abroad may bring in a limited quantity of gold jewellery as personal effects; anything above the limit or in bar/coin form must be declared to Customs and duty is payable. Rules change — check the Sri Lanka Customs website before you travel.

Do I pay tax when selling old gold jewellery?

For an individual selling their own old gold to a jeweller, there is normally no personal income tax on the transaction, but the jeweller will pay you the metal value minus a small buy-back margin. Business-scale sales are treated as trading income.

What is the 916 hallmark and how do I verify it?

916 is the international stamp for 22 karat gold (91.6% pure). Look for the '916' stamp on the clasp, ring inside or bangle joint together with the jeweller's mark. For added safety, ask for an NGJA (National Gem & Jewellery Authority) certificate on higher-value purchases.

How much will a bank lend against one sovereign today?

Banks and licensed pawnbrokers typically advance 65%–85% of the current market value of the pure metal in your item. Use the Gold Loan Advance Estimator above with today's live rate to see a realistic figure before you visit the counter.

Is gold a good investment in Sri Lanka right now compared to an FD?

Gold is an inflation and currency hedge — it tends to hold value when the rupee weakens — but it pays no interest and has a buy/sell spread of a few percent. A Fixed Deposit pays guaranteed interest in rupees but loses purchasing power if the LKR depreciates. Most families keep some of each.

Why do different jewellers quote slightly different prices on the same day?

The metal value is roughly the same everywhere, but making charges (labour), wastage percentage, brand markup and buy-back terms differ. Always ask for an itemised bill separating weight, karat, making charge and any stones.
