Dehiwala is where the city's coastal strip crosses into the suburbs — functionally continuous with Colombo 6 along Galle Road, but administratively its own municipality (with Mount Lavinia), and priced a notch below the city wards it borders.

The residential fabric is mature: Kalubowila, Nedimala, Kawdana, Attidiya and the Hill Street lanes hold decades-old family neighborhoods, while apartment projects have clustered near the station and along Galle Road — Marine City opposite Dehiwala station is the landmark. Buyers get three commute options at once: Galle Road, Marine Drive's extension, and the coastal railway.

The Colombo South Teaching Hospital at Kalubowila, the National Zoo, and the Attidiya bird sanctuary give Dehiwala institutional anchors most suburbs lack — and the beach, for all Galle Road's noise, is genuinely walkable from much of the area.
