How early settlement saves you money

On a reducing-balance loan, every rupee of extra payment goes straight to the principal — so next month's interest is calculated on a smaller balance. The saving compounds every month for the rest of the loan.

Example

On a Rs. 3M personal loan at 14% with 4 years remaining, the EMI is around Rs. 82,000. Paying an extra Rs. 10,000 each month clears the loan roughly 8 months early and saves over Rs. 200,000 in interest — for the same total monthly outlay you were already comfortable paying.

Rules for settling early in Sri Lanka

Ask your lender for a written settlement statement. Confirm the early settlement fee (usually 1–3% for personal/vehicle, ~1% or waived for housing). Get a formal closure letter and check your credit bureau report a month later to confirm the loan shows as fully settled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Sri Lankan banks charge a penalty for early settlement?

Most banks charge a small early settlement fee — usually 1–3% of the outstanding balance for personal and vehicle loans, and around 1% (or waived after 5 years) for housing loans. Even with the penalty, settling early almost always saves you money because you avoid future interest.

Is it better to settle a loan early or invest the money?

Compare the loan's reducing-balance rate to the after-tax return on the investment. Sri Lankan personal loans are usually 14–20% reducing, and no risk-free investment pays that much after tax — so clearing high-rate loans first almost always wins. For a housing loan at 10%, an FD or T-bill at 12% after WHT may narrowly beat early settlement.

Does paying extra each month reduce interest?

Yes. Every extra rupee goes straight to the principal and immediately reduces the interest charged next month. On a Rs. 5M housing loan at 12%, paying just Rs. 10,000 extra a month can shave off 5+ years and save over Rs. 2M in interest.

How do I request early settlement in Sri Lanka?

Contact your lender and ask for a settlement statement — it shows the exact payoff amount including any accrued interest and settlement fee. The figure is valid for a few days; pay it in full and get a written closure letter for your records.

Will early settlement affect my credit score?

No — credit bureau records show the loan closed in good standing, which is positive. Just make sure the lender submits the closure update to the credit bureau; you can check your credit report through the bureau's portal.
