The NIC is the main proof of identity for every Sri Lankan citizen aged 15 and above — needed for voting, banking, SIM cards, a passport and most government work. Issued by the Department for Registration of Persons (DRP).
How to apply
- 1Get the application and have it certified by your Grama Niladhari and Divisional Secretary.
- 2Attach your birth certificate (or certified extract) and an ICAO-standard photo taken within 6 months.
- 3Pay any applicable fee and attach the receipt.
- 4Submit through the certifying officer, or use the One-Day Service at the DRP head office, Battaramulla.
- 5Track by the SMS the department sends; collect your card or receive it by post.

- Application certified by Grama Niladhari + Divisional Secretary
- For a lost card: police report

Good to know
The DRP sends an SMS at each stage. The first NIC is free — avoid agents who ask for money to "speed it up".
